How do you know when it is time for a glass replacement?

As homeowners, we are constantly updating our homes ensuring modernization and efficiency. When it comes to our windows and glass replacements, there are many factors to consider when replacing glass. Knowing when to replace insulating glass (IGUs) is important for maintaining energy efficiency, comfort, and aesthetics in a home or building. Over time, insulating glass can deteriorate due to wear and tear, environmental conditions, or poor installation. Here are several signs that indicate your insulating glass may need to be replaced:

1. Visible Condensation Between the Glass Panes

  • One of the most common signs that an insulating glass unit needs replacing is visible condensation or fogging between the glass panes. This occurs when the seal around the IGU fails, allowing moisture to enter the space between the glass layers.
  • What it means: This indicates that the insulating gas (like argon) has leaked out, and the unit no longer provides the same thermal insulation. Over time, this can lead to energy inefficiency and increased heating/cooling costs.

2. Deteriorating Seal

  • If the sealant or gasket around the IGU has cracked, peeled, or is visibly deteriorating, it may compromise the unit’s performance.
  • What it means: A broken seal allows air and moisture to infiltrate, leading to a loss of insulation and possible condensation buildup. If the seal is damaged, the insulating properties of the glass unit will no longer work effectively.

3. Drafts Around the Window

  • Feeling drafts near windows, especially when the weather is cold, is a sign of a failing IGU.
  • What it means: The insulating glass may have lost its ability to prevent the transfer of heat. This could be due to a broken seal or poor installation, allowing air to pass through the glass and leading to reduced energy efficiency.

4. Noticeable Temperature Changes Near Windows

  • If you notice cold spots in the winter or heat near the windows in the summer, it could indicate that the insulating glass is no longer performing well.
  • What it means: The IGU is no longer insulating the space properly, allowing heat transfer between the inside and outside of the home or building. This can be particularly noticeable with older or poorly sealed units.

5. Worn or Discolored Frames

  • Over time, the frame surrounding the insulating glass may begin to degrade. If the frame is made of materials that are not weather-resistant (such as wood), it can warp, crack, or show signs of decay, which can also affect the glass unit’s performance.
  • What it means: Damage to the frame can compromise the IGU’s ability to maintain its integrity and thermal performance. If the frame is damaged, it might be a sign that the IGU itself needs replacing as well.

6. Visible Damage to the Glass

  • Cracks, chips, or deep scratches on the glass can affect the performance and safety of the IGU.
  • What it means: If the glass is damaged, it may compromise the insulation and safety of the unit. Even if the glass appears intact, cracks in the outer layer could allow moisture to enter, leading to condensation between the panes.

7. Increase in Energy Bills

  • A sudden or gradual increase in heating or cooling costs could be a sign that your windows are no longer performing optimally.
  • What it means: Insulating glass helps regulate temperature inside a building by reducing the transfer of heat. When IGUs fail, the building may require more energy to maintain a comfortable temperature, causing your utility bills to rise.

8. Old or Outdated Insulating Glass Units

  • If your windows are older and were installed before modern energy-efficient standards, they may not have the same insulating properties as newer IGUs.
  • What it means: Even if there are no visible signs of damage, older IGUs may not perform as well as newer models, which can result in poor insulation, higher energy consumption, and reduced comfort.

9. Decreased Aesthetic Appeal

  • Over time, insulating glass can lose its clarity or show discoloration due to seal failure, especially if the gas inside the unit leaks out and moisture builds up.
  • What it means: If the glass has become cloudy or discolored, it may be a sign that the unit’s integrity has been compromised, reducing its appearance and performance.

10. Increased Noise Levels

  • If you start to notice an increase in outside noise entering the building, it could indicate that the insulating glass has lost its soundproofing ability.
  • What it means: IGUs not only help with thermal insulation but also with soundproofing. If the insulating gas has leaked out or the unit has been damaged, noise insulation could be compromised.

What to Do

If you notice any of these signs, it might be time to call a professional. At Mesko Glass we’re able to work on glass of all size. We can access whether the glass needs to be replaced. In most cases, once the seal is broken or the gas leaks out, the insulating properties are permanently compromised, and replacement is necessary for optimal performance. Replacing the IGU will restore its energy efficiency, appearance, and functionality.
